Husband gets upgraded to business class, and he accepts even though it meant leaving his family behind, wife seems happy about it at first: ‘Now she's angry that I didn't refuse the upgrade so that I could sit with her and the kids for the entire flight’

Last week, my wife, our two kids and I flew back from Asia to Europe. It was an 11-hour flight. Both kids are young teenagers who don't need any special attention or care; they're old enough to look after themselves during the flight. We didn't all travel to Asia together, so I was on a separate booking from my wife and kids. We were all originally booked in premium economy because of the extra legroom. I'm 186 cm (6'1"), so I gladly pay for the extra legroom on long-haul flights. As an aviation

class, but on long intercontinental flights, it's simply ridiculously expensive and something I would never normally pay for myself. In fact, when checking in for the flight, I was asked if I might be interested in upgrading to business class. The upgrade wasn't free, however. It was more than €1,000 per person, so I obviously declined. When we were boarding, the gate agent took my boarding pass, crossed out my seat number, and wrote down a different one. She then said, "Upgrade to business."

In hindsight, I suspect the flight was overbooked in premium economy and they needed to move one passenger to business. Since I appeared to be travelling alone as I was on a separate booking from my wife and kids, I suspect I looked like the ideal candidate. And after they had already tried to sell me the upgrade at check- in, I guess they had little choice but to upgrade me for free once they needed to move someone. Obviously, I accepted the upgrade. My wife actually seemed excited when she saw

seemed genuinely happy that I got the opportunity to experience business class. After accepting the upgrade, I immediately asked her if she wanted my upgraded business class seat instead. She said she was fine with her seat and didn't have a problem with me taking the upgrade. If she wanted it, I would have gladly let her change seats with me. During the flight, I went back several times to check that she and the kids were okay. I also brought them snacks and drinks from the business class cabin

wanted. As far as I could tell, everything was completely fine. There was no argument, no indication that she was upset, and she never said that she wanted me to sit with her and the kids. However, now she's angry that I didn't refuse the upgrade in the first place so that I could sit with her and the kids for the entire flight. I honestly didn't see the problem at the time, and to be honest, I still don't see it right now. I accepted the upgrade, immediately offered it to her, and she

declined. I also checked on them throughout the flight and offered to switch seats multiple times.

Chaotic Crashy ΝΤΑ Your wife gave you her support for the seat. She can't change her mind this late.

z-eldapin Nah, she had a LOT of time to use her grown adult voice. To wait and tweak after the fact is manipulative.

cecsix14 NTA. My wife and I had this happen on our last Europe trip. She took the upgrade on the way there and luckily, we were offered it on the way back and I offered it to her but she insisted that I take it. BTW this is a real first world problem. I mean, premium economy is fine for the kids. It's not like you forced them to ride in the cargo hold.

kcnvrmnd NTA... don't act like you're happy for something I'm experiencing when you're there with me, only to make it a problem down the line. That's weird as h | for someone to do. You offered and she declined. Why be angry?

caryn 1477 If this is the whole honest story then of course nta. She literally gave no indication that she was upset and decided to throw a fit about it after the fact. It makes no sense to me.

Typical-booksta NTA, you don't refuse free things like that, especially if it's something you've always wanted to experience and probably wouldn't do so otherwise cause it's too expensive. If the kids were small then, yes, you'd be the AH but they're not and you literally offered your wife the seat and gave them snacks etc. and saw them so it wasn't like you disappeared for the whole flight. Don't feel guilty! She could have switched with you for a bit if she thought it was unfair at any point (

Tinkerbell RockNRolls Yeah, this one will get downvoted but it needs to be said. Unfortunately, SOME women were raised to be "living martyrs"; specifically, to place everyone else's needs and wants before their own, and to demurely smile while their needs are ignored. They were raised to not speak too loudly, not to say anything that could instigate conflict, to not properly advocate for themselves, and (most importantly) to never be "selfish". This MIGHT explain why she feels resentful after-th

cause of you declining the upgrade, but also would've felt "selfish" taking it for herself. However, she truthfully wasn't okay with you choosing the upgrade. She probably felt abandoned. What PROBABLY would have made your wife feel loved is if YOU had been the one to decline the upgrade ... or... if YOU had INSISTED that she enjoy the upgrade. This would circumvent her being forced to choose between feeling abandoned or feeling "selfish". As you've hopefully gleaned, your wife's attitude is pro

Now, you're free to ride with the majority opinion... IF you seek mass validation over marital harmony. However, if you truly love your wife, and want to fix this, then you have some work to do. You need to ensure your wife knows that you love her and you wouldn't abandon her when "better" offers come along. If you can honestly tell her that you'd give her a kidney and would take a bullet for her, that's the right path towards restoring her faith in you... and your marriage. In my opinion, I thi

HumanContract 4 of you, where were your original seats? Bc if she was supposed to sit next to you and your seat went to someone annoying af, I could imagine her changing her mind. However, what's done is done. Book separately next time and when you get an upgrade, it should go to her.
